Sharing kids’ photos
How to ask family not to post photos of your kids.
To ask family not to post photos of your children, thank them first, give one simple reason, and make it a family rule rather than a complaint. Then give them a better place: a private family album where they see every photo first. Most grandparents post because they’re proud, not to upset you.
Lumo is a free, private family album for iPhone, iPad and Android. Send one link and the whole family can join.

Why it’s hard to ask
For many grandparents, posting a photo is how they say how proud they are. Asking them to stop can sound like criticism, so many parents say nothing and feel uneasy every time.
It helps to remember you’re not asking them to love the photos less. You’re asking them to share them in a different place.
What to say
- Start with thanks: “We love that you love these photos.”
- Give one simple reason: “We’re keeping the kids’ photos off the internet until they’re old enough to decide.”
- Make it a family rule, not a rule for one person, so nobody feels singled out.
- Offer the alternative in the same breath: “We’ll put every photo in the family album, and you’ll see them first.”
Give them a better place
A private family album gives grandparents more than a feed would: every photo and video as soon as it’s added, in order, with hearts and comments the whole family sees. Nothing is public, and there’s nothing to post.
Joining is simple: tap a private invite link, or type your 4-digit family code and someone lets them in.
Sharing photos with grandparents
If a photo is already posted
Ask kindly for that one photo to be taken down, and don’t make it a bigger conversation than it needs to be. Once the family has the album, most people stop posting on their own.
